Formerly Incarcerated Women Association (FIWA)
The Formerly Incarcerated Women Association (FIWA) is a support group and Community-Based Organization (CBO) in Uganda that provides resources and community support for women rebuilding their lives after prison. It operates as an umbrella initiative under Wells of Hope Ministries and is based in Kyebando, Kampala.
Psychosocial Support: Provides a safe space for women to share their stories of hope and find emotional support from peers who have also experienced incarceration.
Safe Housing: Members often transition through the Wells of Hope Women’s Safe Home, the only halfway house for women in Uganda, which offers a secure refuge before they return to their home villages.
Economic Empowerment: The association offers financial literacy training, business skills development, and micro-loans to help women start or strengthen small businesses.
Advocacy: FIWA works to combat negative stereotypes and change the narrative surrounding women who have been in the justice system.
Trauma-Informed Care: Addressing the emotional and psychological scars of abuse and incarceration.
Family Reunification: Helping women to return home, rebuild relationships, secure housing, and redefine roles
Economic Empowerment: Organizations offer vocational training, financial literacy workshops, and assistance finding employment to reduce recidivism.
Legal & Resource Support: Through the Access to Legal Project formerly incarcerated women are offered awareness and sensitization on the various laws and how to abide by the laws so as to prevent them from committing crimes and going back to prison.
The formerly incarcerated Women are provided advocacy classes and how to fight for their rights while out of prison.
Helping the ladies recover their properties (Legal Support upon release from Prison).
Helping the women to reconnect with their children especially those who relatives dont want to reunite with their released mother
Promotion of the rights of formerly incarcerated women to influence policy, legislation , ensure fair treatment, and drive social change to better lives of women. We also empowering voices to speak about injustice and fairness of women and girls.
HIV/AIDS: we carry out activities geared towards eliminating stigma, provide care and empower women to fight against HIV/AIDS
Representation: Many members are women who survived long sentences, including some
who were previously on death row.
Outreach: During events like world women’s day commemoration, the organization facilitates visits to formerly incarcerated women in remote villages and urban ghettos to ensure they remain connected and supported.
Well of Hope safe home is a program under Wells of Hope Ministries where women that are being released from incarceration and cannot immediately go back to their communities can find shelter.
